Northwood History

Northwood was developed from 1999 over five years. Northwood emerged when in 1995 The Proposed Christchurch City Plan attracted many submissions requesting the rezoning of rural blocks, including the Styx Block, a 97 Hectare block "Applefields" orchard south of Belfast, Christchurch.

Northwood was an original flat river terrace, on the north boundary of the Styx Mill Reserve. Northwood hosts The Styx River, which is one of several spring fed river systems that flow through Christchurch.

Northwood was one for the first subdivisions in Christchurch that encouraged the production of newer and contemporary homes. When Northwood was developed the master plan had strongly articulated new urbanism design principles that had not really been seen before in Christchurch.
